whitecity, london

designed by ian ritchie architects ltd (iral) as one of europe's largest inner city regeneration schemes, whitecity was to incorporate major shopping, leisure, culture and new transport facilities in west london.
tagebau architekten + designer were commissioned by iral to produce large parts of the construction information and the concept for the car parking levels.
this 15 hectare project was to be knitted into the surrounding urban fabric and spaces and continue them into and through a network of public squares, naturally ventilated "streets" and a central "wintergarden". their scale was modelled on the great european arcades of the 19th century. the natural ventilation and fabric roof design avoided the typical "sealed mall-atmosphere" of conditioned air and aimed to significantly reduce energy consumption.
after major parts of the structure were completed on site the australian westfield group bought iral´s client, chelsfield, and took over the scheme, and while they kept the basic planning and infrastructure of the original concept they radically changed all of the external and internal architecture without the involvement of either iral or tagebau.
the public transport infrastructure was completed by iral.
