centre for the preservation of books, zfb leipzig
the new centre for the preservation of books (zentrum für bucherhaltung - zfb) provides offices, laboratories and production facilities for the leading supplier of solutions for archives and libraries world-wide.the single-storey building is accessed by a central axis running through the whole building and forms the main route for the complex services of the centre. on the green roof this axis is visible as the central services zone.the steel-frames of the central zone stiffen the building in the short direction and allow 14m deep clear spaces either side of the axis.laminated timber beams run in pairs across this space.the wood as the base material for the paper that is being processed in the centre gives are warm atmosphere to the spaces. the building is heated and cooled by a heat pump using geothermal collectors. all technical heating and cooling requirements are also integrated into the system for optimum energy efficiency.tagebau architekten + designer were general-planners for this building.
