hcu hafencity university, hamburg
the site is to be dominated by two strong urban markers: a tall office building as an elegant and simple counterpoint to the spectacular organic form of the neighbouring science centre and the volume of the hafencity university (hcu).
the central element of the hcu is the integrated public space which develops as a rising transparent band around three sides of the building. this space of the "große hamburger treppe" or "great stairs of hamburg" is expressed on the southern facade overlooking the water across all six storeys and forms a dynamic foyer space.
at roof level this foyer transforms itself into a café and bar area accessible to the public.
