fire stations leipzig

at the end of 2008 tagebau architekten + designer were invited by the city of leipzig to contribute to a competitive design process for three identical new fire station for leipzig. the stations are to be built over the coming years around the city's peripherie to shorten alarm times.
the tagebau proposal develops the stations as compact objects that can be placed in different locations. the garages for the four fire engines are fully integrated into the compact volume, which aims to reduce the loss through thermal transmission by minimising the area of external building skin in order to provide a thermally passive building .
the daytime spaces and operations rooms of the building are placed on the ground floor, whereas the more private sleeping rooms and sanitary facilities are located in the quieter upper floor. sanitary facilities and storage areas are located in the center of the building with the heat exchangers and the ventilation equipment above. the physically critical fresh air ducts within the building are thus minimised / avoided.
at the end of the building the skin is continued to provide a sheltered outside space for the staff of the station.
